Experts have issued warnings about even more extreme weather conditions expected in the coming days. Firefighters are struggling to contain a particularly dangerous fire burning near the outskirts of Athens. Thick smoke has engulfed parts of the capital, casting a dark haze over the city. Emergency services have issued mandatory evacuation orders in several towns across the region. The historic site of Marathon is among the areas currently affected by these fires. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis cut short his vacation to return to Athens on Sunday evening. He returned to the capital to take charge of the unfolding crisis and coordinate the response. Firefighters have successfully brought 33 out of 40 fires under control within the last 24 hours. This update was provided by a fire department spokesperson during an emergency press briefing.
