During a visit to a performing arts high school last fall, NLE Choppa summed up his artistic approach with a confession. “I wasn’t good at expressing myself or talking to people about my problems so I started to use [music] as my escape.” On the surface, the Memphis rhymer’s hard-hitting street yarns don’t point to that kind of social trepidation; on his massively successful ‘Cottonwood’ and ‘Top Shotta’ albums, the 20-year-old paints a portrait of himself as a fearless hood general. But that’s just a requisite part of the game these days.
