The Shirelles performing “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow“, released originally in 1961. It reached #1 in the US Billboard Hot 100, #1 in the US Cash Box Top 100, #2 in the US Billboard R&B chart, #3 in the UK Singles Chart, and #4 in New Zealand. “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow“ is a song about the singer wondering what will happen the day after an encounter with her man. It was initially disliked by Shirelles lead singer Shirley Alston, who thought it was too “Country and Western“ for the group. However, producer Luther Dixon convinced her they could do it in their style, and asked songwriters Gerry Goffin and Carole King if they could add strings and turn it into an uptempo song, which they did. The song’s lyrics met with some resistance from radio stations, but it still went on to become a huge hit, selling over a million copies. Goffin and King were a husband and wife songwriting team who worked for Don Kirshner’s Aldon music. Kirshner assigned them to write a follow-up song to “Tonight’s The Night“ for The Shirelles. King came up with the music, and Goffin quickly came up with the lyrics. Kirshner loved the song, and decided to use it to get in the door at Columbia Records. However, Columbia’s label head Mitch Miller declined the offer. The song was eventually offered to The Shirelles, where it was intended all along. The Shirelles were a four-girl group from Passaic, New Jersey. “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow“ was produced by Luther Dixon.
