A medical phalanx comprising more than 260 female soldiers has been undergoing arduous training at the military parade village in Beijing in preparation for the Victory Day parade on September 3.
Bethune medical phalanx will be part of the armament formation, which means the female soldiers will need to stand still throughout the almost three-hour parade. Therefore, standing upright for long periods has been the main content of their training.
Wei Lai, one of the soldiers, encountered some difficulties at the beginning of the training.
“I used to be an athlete and I am still a little hunchbacked and bowlegged, but none of this should appear in the military parade,“ said Wei.
Having been a table tennis player for more than a decade, Wei spent so much time bending down to hit the ball that her posture changed. However, she has managed to correct her posture in only three months.
After her daytime training, Wei asked other soldiers to tie a steel frame to her back and a rope around her legs.
She said that one time her legs were tied together for over three hours and she could barely move after untying them.
“While standing there, we would imagine that it is the day of the military parade and it would be the least tiring moment. We imagine that we are standing on Chang’an Avenue and how many spectators are watching us,“ Wei said.
