Natural disaster 14 August 2024 A powerful storm with torrential rain swept through Duisburg overnight, causing widespread disruption. Several streets across the city were completely flooded due to the relentless downpour. The city center experienced intense rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and massive hailstones. Water surged into numerous subway stations, flooding them nearly halfway up. Reports from Ruhrort indicated that several cars were seriously damaged by the hail. According to the fire department, the water level in Obermeiderich reached an alarming two meters. Many basements across the city were completely inundated by floodwaters. The fire service received around 1,400 emergency calls within just 15 minutes during the evening. Traffic throughout Duisburg was severely disrupted as roads became impassable. The A59 highway was completely submerged, bringing all vehicle movement to a halt. The A59 was temporarily closed in the areas hardest hit by the storm’s impact. In Bonn, fire crews were on constant duty, tirelessly pumping out flooded basements. Police also reported several sections of the A42 highway being heavily flooded. In Würselen, a lightning strike ignited a roof structure, causing significant damage. The residential building affected by the fire was rendered entirely uninhabitable.
