Pandit Nehru Visits Calcutta (1949)

Calcutta, India. Documentation states the moment Nehru’s car started to leave the aerodrome crowds broke through all the police cordons and rushed towards the car to welcome and garland him. Most of the time it was raining when Nehru spoke to the people. Umbrellas could be seen all over the Maidan. Suddenly sections of the crowd started shouting anti-Nehru and anti-Government slogans. Some of them said march forward and kill Nehru. But most of the people at the Maidan did not like this demonstration and they man handled the demonstrators. The police tried to rush to the scene but Nehru said over microphone that they should let the people handle it themselves. Most of the demonstrators were rowdy and drew down the Indian dominion flags and tried their best to excite the crowd but Nehru’s dominating personality overpowered the rowdy influence when the demonstrators were severely beaten by the crowd.
