WHEN Sharon Fritts married her husband Donnie she promised to stick by him through thick and thin. But within a few years those vows were to be tested as Donnie developed an aggressive form of cancer on his face. In early 2003 Donnie was told by doctors to make a choice: his face or his life. He decided to have an operation that would remove the ultra-rare cancer—called ameloblastic carcinoma -- along with much of his face. The 12-hour surgery was a success but left Donnie, a former carpenter, with a gaping hole in the middle of his face. He no longer had a nose, upper lip and palate and part of his forehead was missing. There was some joy in 2011 as a top team of surgeons gave Donnie a prosthetic to make it look like he had a normal face.
