In 1808, King Ferdinand VII of Spain abdicated in favour of Napoleon, who put his brother Joseph on the Spanish throne. News of these events were brought to Buenos Aires by British ships arriving on 18 May, resulting in the establishment on 25 May 1808 of the Primera Junta and effective self-determination. This May Revolution began the War of Argentine Independence that culminated in the Congress of Tucumán and a formal declaration of independence on 9 July, 1816.

INDEPENDENCIA
Independencia que pusiste paz
en esta tierra que nací
los argentinos recordarán
aquella fecha de libertad.
Un 25 puso luz y amor
en esas almas que soñaban
los corazones ansiosos palpitaban
llenos de entusiasmoy pasión.
Patria de valientes, patria noble
de bandera azul y blanca
Patria de jilgueros y emociones
que desde entonces te quiero más.
En tu independencia se forjaron
los ideales más sublimes
en este suelo tan divino
soy feliz siendo argentino
es mi patria lo mejor.
Con agradecimiento a
INDEPENDENCE
Independence gave peace
To this land where I was born
Argentines remember
That date of freedom.
One 25th* put light and love
Into those souls who dreamed,
Impatient hearts beat
Full of enthusiasm and passion.
Home of the brave, noble country
Of the blue and white flag
Homeland of angels and emotions
That from that day I love more.
In your independence were forged
The loftiest ideals
In this earth so divine
I am happy being Argentine
My country is the best.
*25 May 1810
