A Brief History of The Nutcracker: Tchaikovsky, Dumas, and Hoffmann
The Nutcracker. A story that spawned a thousand childrens books and countless adaptations for the stage, and then eventually made it to the silver screen. But, the origins of the Nutcracker isn’t the history of one nutcracker story. In fact, it is a history of four different nutcrackers.
We look at the origins of the nutcracker as a short story by . Hoffman in the early 1800s, then to the remake of the story by Alexandre Dumas later in the century. Then the story is picked up by Marius Petipa and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to turn it into a ballet. However, that does not go as planned and it won’t be until the mid 20th century when George Balanchine creates his version of the nutcracker ballet that the idea starts to catch on.
