A common joke is that no military coup has occurred in the United States because no US embassy exists there. What economist Jeffrey Sachs (@drjeffreysachs) said would have been hilarious if the consequences of US interventions hadn’t devastated so many people. For decades, the US government and its agencies, such as the CIA, have spearheaded, encouraged and facilitated the overthrow of many governments and leaders in the Global South that refused to toe its line. In Africa, US fingerprints are all over the overthrow of leaders such as Patrice Lumumba, Thomas Sankara and Muammar Gaddafi. The US also instigated and prolonged civil wars by providing resources to rebels, such as Angola’s Jonas Savimbi and Liberia’s Charles Taylor. Beyond the shores of Africa, the US helped to overthrow leaders such as Haiti’s Jean-Bertrand Aristide and Chile’s Salvador Allende. So, while people sitting in the US can afford to laugh at this joke, the citizens of countries destroyed by dictators who took over in the aftermath of US-sponsored coups can not afford to do so.
