Enjoy this combined practice of somatics to increase range of motion with functional movement for the neck and shoulders. This practice is particularly helpful if you spend a significant about of time seated, look down at a cell phone often or have a desk job where you are hunched over a keyboard. In somatics, the term red light reflex describes a torso position when the front body muscles are short and pull you forward and back body is in “slump-asana“ (head forward, shoulders and back rounded). The red light reflex is the bodies natural reaction to withdraw or shrinking away from fear. This primitive response is useful to protect our vulnerable front side from attack, but becomes problematic and painful when habituated. It even limits our breathing. Where this position used to be seen mostly in advanced age, it is now more common at all ages due to prolonged sitting, electronics and stress.
