MIKE MENTZER: A BODYBUILDING PROGRAM FOR TRAINEES WITH GOOD TO EXCELLENT RECOVERY ABILITY

Some viewers have inquired what Mike’s original four-day split routine looked like, back when he was training for the Mr. Universe competition. It was virtually identical to the program he advocates in this video. Prior to 1977, Mike trained using a full body three times per week program (approximately two to five sets per muscle group). Such a program, Mike later discovered, proved to be too much for the average trainee to recover from. Consequently, he reduced the number of recommended sets to one per exercise, and counselled not to perform more than two sets per muscle group with three to five days off in between workouts. This worked wonderfully for most of his training clients. However, Mike also mentioned that a small percentage of his clients (those with genetics indicating a greater than average recovery ability), could actually tolerate a little more volume and frequency than the majority of his clients. Such individuals will find this program to be of interest. Culled from a training video Mike
