DAVID CROSBY & THE GRATEFUL DEAD (1970) “David & The Dorks“ Matrix in San Francisco | Live Concert | Blues | Full Album
Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead collaborated, David Crosby, a founding member of the band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, also teamed up with the Grateful Dead for a brief period in 1970. The collaboration was called David & The Dorks, and it featured Crosby performing with the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, and Mickey Hart.
The recording of David & The Dorks from December 1970 is a fascinating document of this collaboration. The recording includes a KSAN radio broadcast from The Matrix in San Francisco on December 15, 1970, as well as a few tracks from a rehearsal before the show.
The first eight songs on the recording were broadcast on KSAN 95 FM, and they showcase the unique chemistry between Crosby and the Grateful Dead. The songs include covers of traditional folk and blues tunes, as well as original compositions from Crosby and Garcia.
The performance is notable for its loose, improvisational feel, with the musicians exploring new musical territory and pushing the boundaries of what was possible in a live setting. Crosby’s voice blends beautifully with Garcia’s guitar work, and the rhythm section of Lesh and Hart provides a solid foundation for the music.
Overall, the David & The Dorks collaboration may not be as well-known as some of the other collaborations between rock legends, but it is a fascinating and unique moment in the history of American music. The December 1970 recording is a must-listen for fans of David Crosby, the Grateful Dead, or anyone interested in the evolution of rock music in the 1970s.

David Van Cortlandt Crosby (born August 14, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter and musician. In addition to his solo career, he was a founding member of both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash.
Crosby joined the Byrds in 1964. Bob Dylan gave the band their first number one hit in April 1965 with “Mr. Tambourine Man“. Crosby appeared on the Byrds’ first five albums and produced the original lineup’s 1973 reunion album.
In 1967 he joined Buffalo Springfield on stage at the Monterey Pop Festival, which contributed to his dismissal from the Byrds. He subsequently formed Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968 with Stephen Stills (of Buffalo Springfield) and Graham Nash of the Hollies.
After the release of their debut album CSN won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of 1969. Neil Young joined the group for live appearances, their second concert being Woodstock, before recording their second album Déjà Vu.
Meant to be a group that could collaborate freely, Crosby and Nash recorded three gold albums in the 1970s, while the core trio of CSN remained active from 1976 until 2016. CSNY reunions took place in each decade from the 1970s through the 2000s.
Songs Crosby wrote or co-wrote include “Lady Friend“, “Why“, and “Eight Miles High“ with the Byrds and “Guinnevere“, “Wooden Ships“, “Shadow Captain“, and “In My Dreams“ with Crosby, Stills & Nash.
He wrote “Almost Cut My Hair“ and the title track “Déjà Vu“ for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s 1970 album. He is known for his use of alternative guitar tunings and jazz influences.
He has released six solo albums, five of which have charted. Additionally he formed a jazz-influenced trio with his son James Raymond and guitarist Jeff Pevar in CPR. Crosby’s work with the Byrds and CSNY has sold over 35 million albums.
Five albums to which he contributed are included in Rolling Stone’s The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, three with the Byrds and two with CSN(Y). He is outspoken politically and has been depicted as emblematic of the 1960s’ counterculture.
