Can we make sense of Biden’s “Israeli“ ceasefire proposal, with Ali Abunimah
On Friday, US President Joe Biden made an unexpected speech laying out what he called an Israeli proposal that would lead to a permanent ceasefire in Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Confusion quickly ensued as the Israeli government described Biden’s call for a permanent ceasefire as a “nonstarter.” How could the Israeli government be publicly undermining what was said to be its own proposal?
Nonetheless Biden’s speech indicated that as the US election looms, his administration appears eager to end a war of extermination it continues to arm and enable, albeit without taking effective steps to halt Israel’s killing campaign and paying the political price of a complete about-face.
Ali Abunimah discusses the prospects for a ceasefire with Nora Barrows-Friedman.
Nora Barrows-Friedman, Asa Winstanley, Ali Abunimah and Jon Elmer of The Electronic Intifada were joined by Helena Cobban on the day 243 of the livestream. You can watch the entire broadcast here:
