Myanmar protests continue on eve of Armed Forces Day as death toll surpasses 300

Three people were killed on Friday and more were wounded after Myanmar forces opened fire on anti-junta protesters waving black flags, a witness who declined to be identified, told reporters. At least 320 people have been killed in the crackdown on dissent since the Feb. 1 military coup, according to figures compiled by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) activist group. AAPP says its tally includes only documented cases, with the actual number of casualties “likely much higher.” Myanmar has been rocked by almost daily protests since the army overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government and installed the junta. Suu Kyi and other members of her National League for Democracy (NLD) are being held in detention. Organizers have also called for widespread protests on Saturday, observed as Armed Forces Day, commemorating the start of the military’s resistance to Japanese occupation in 1945.
