According to Dick James, during a rehearsal for Another Beatles’ Christmas Show, Paul and John had been working on a song. “There’s a title I’ve got in mind,” John said to me, “which I can’t get rid of: She’s got a ticket to ride.” I liked the phrase, for it was a slightly more original way of expressing goodbye and parting. I encouraged John to work at it, and the matter then passed into the back of my mind.” It wasn’t until February 14th, after Paul had returned from holiday, that the song was completed during a three-hour writing session. The next day, the song was brought into the studio to be recorded. Track 1 contained Paul’s bass and Ringo’s drums, track 2 had John and George’s guitars, and track 3 featured John and Paul’s vocals. This session marked the last time George used his 12-string Rickenbacker. Only two takes of the rhythm track were needed before overdubs were added. These included John double-tracking some lines, Ringo on tambourine along with handclaps, George overdubbing a guitar part with a foot-controlled volume pedal, and Paul playing additional riffs throughout. With that, the song was completed.
