Little Red Flying-Fox mum and baby: Daffodil and Dandelion

Little Red Flying-Fox mum Daffodil is in rehab to heal after coming into care off barbed wire. Baby boy Dandelion was born in care. Daffodil is a wild bat and is still quite wary of the carer, so when her baby decided to become independent and start to explore, she tried to pull him back to safety. Since then Dandelion makes a point of hanging alone when he can, so the carer was able to catch him quickly and weigh and measure him to make sure he was developing and doing well. This footage is part of a fundraiser for a new aviary she’s building, where the rehab batties and permanent care batties can be separated, and Walter and Teddy and the old dudes can have integrated space so they’re at the same height as the other bats but have a trampoline net to catch them if they get tottery and fall, and so they can have lots of interaction with the others if they choose, without sharing their space (heavens, we all know what happens now if anyone from the
