Kidnapped Girl Found In Man’s Basement (London, 1957). A lady in Lewisham Park finds a note in her garden hedge explaining that a girl is being held captive in the basement of her neighbour’s shed. The police search John Bridle’s workshop and discover a manhole leading to a basement living quarter, where they discover Marjorie Jordan. She had initially agreed to participate in some experiments, but then he kept her there against her will for 105 days. The makeshift basement apartment has a kitchen area. The Pathe camera lingers spookily on the bed. The clip shows Marjorie recovering in Brighton, East Sussex, and then a shot of police taking the kidnapper away. On July 17 1957, The News & Courier newspaper reported the following: “A 27-year-old labourer was sentenced to three years in jail today for keeping a girl imprisoned in a hole in the ground for 3 and half months.
