How Great White Sharks hunt around the Dyer Island ecosystem
Near the Southernmost tip of Africa, the Dyer Island ecosystem is home to the Marine Big 5.
Here you will find Cape Fur seals, endangered African Penguins, various species of whales and dolphins, the iconic Great White shark, Bronze Whaler sharks and many seabirds.
Researchers from the Dyer Island Conservation Trust published some of the first tracking studies of how Great White sharks hunt around the Dyer Island ecosystem.
Dyer Island is different from other seal colonies in South Africa in that it is the only area surrounded by thick, dense kelp forests, providing the seals with some refuge from predators. Do Great White sharks swim through kelp?
Eco-tourism is critical to the protection of the Dyer Island ecosystem, which still, like many other marine habitats, suffers a host of threats.
