Petula Clark performing “Downtown“, released originally in 1964.
It reached #1 in Canada, #1 in West Germany, #1 in New Zealand, #1 in the US Billboard Hot 100, and #2 in the UK Singles Charts.
“Downtown“ was written and produced by British songwriter Tony Hatch, who wrote most of Petula Clark’s material during the ’60s, including her follow-up hit, “I Know a Place“ (which also deals with city life). Hatch was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.
This song was Petula Clark’s first hit in the US, which was slow to discover her talents. In the UK, she was already a star as a singer and a television performer, regularly appearing on the BBC. In the early ’60s, she also gained popularity in France when she started recording her songs in French.
Petula Clark came to record “Downtown“ at a time when she had already established a successful career in French, Italian, and German-speaking territories. Clark recalled that Tony Hatch suggested she should record again in English. Initially hesitant, she agreed after hearing the unfinished song and asked Hatch to write a lyric up to the standard of the tune. Two weeks later, they recorded the song.
“Downtown“ won a Grammy in 1965 for Best Rock & Roll Recording, making Clark the first British singer to win a Grammy. In 2003, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
With its catchy melody and uplifting lyrics, “Downtown“ continues to be a beloved classic that resonates with listeners. The song has a timeless appeal, ensuring its popularity for years to come, as fans of all ages continue to enjoy its upbeat sound and nostalgic charm.
