Since then, the region has been under the control of Transnistrian forces while Russia also maintains military units here. After 1992, very little changed about the situation in Transnistria until late February 2022, when the war in Ukraine began. With that, discussions about Transnistria became tense, especially after a series of explosions occurred in Transnistria in late April 2022. Unsurprisingly, concerns grew that the region might drag Moldova into the conflict as well, since Russia may seek to integrate it into the Russian Federation alongside what it can occupy in Ukraine.
