Miles Davis described Bill Evans as his favorite pianist, saying “The sound he got was like crystal notes cascading from some clear waterfall.” Evans charted new paths—some would consider his to be the greatest piano trio of all time and his influence as a pianist and a composer was monumental. A 1959 album was titled ’Everybody Digs Bill Evans’ and to a large extent that’s true. This is the first of two episodes focusing on a beloved and revered musician who played an outsize role in the evolution of jazz music. ABOUT THIS SERIES The Jazz History series is a video adaptation of a PowerPoint presentation used to teach a university course in jazz history. It traces the roots of jazz from Ragtime at the turn of the 20th century to jazz-rock fusion at the end of the 1960s.
