KHOLMOGORY, ARKHANGELSK REGION A village (before 1925 - a town) in the lower reaches of the Northern Dvina, administrative center and the largest settlement of Kholmogorsky district of Arkhangelsk region. Before Peter the Great, it was the main town of the Dvinsky land, the center of the Kholmogory diocese. The village of Lomonosovo, located near Kholmogory on Kurostrov Island, is known as the birthplace of Mikhail Lomonosov, the first major Russian natural scientist.
