Typhoon Bebinca, the strongest storm to strike Shanghai since 1949, caused widespread disruption across the city on Monday. Powerful winds of up to 94 mph and torrential rains led to the evacuation of over 414,000 people. Roads were flooded, trees uprooted, and power was knocked out in several areas, leaving 380 households without electricity. Schools were closed, and authorities advised residents to stay indoors.
One elderly man was injured by a falling tree on Chongming Island. Emergency teams, including over 60,000 responders, are working to clear debris and restore order. The storm also caused significant damage to infrastructure, flooding 132 acres of farmland and uprooting more than 10,000 trees.
Air travel was severely impacted, with hundreds of flights canceled across Shanghai and neighboring cities like Hangzhou. As the typhoon moved inland, it weakened but continued to drench the provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui, and Zhejiang.
