The Queen’s Royal Tour of Kenya, India and Bangladesh (1983)

On 10 November 1983, Queen Elizabeth II arrived in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi at the start of a four-day visit to the country. Travelling with Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen was visiting the country for the second time since February 1952, when the then-Princess Elizabeth had her visit cut short after receiving news that her father, King George VI, had died – and that she had ascended the throne. The 1983 visit was therefore especially poignant, and included a return by the royal couple to Sagana Lodge, where the pair were staying when the Queen received the news more than 30 years before. The Royal visit to Kenya was followed by visits to Bangladesh and India. In Bangladesh, the Queen visited the capital city of Dakha, while the Duke flew alone to the city of Sylhet. The pair then reunited to travel to India, where they were welcomed in the capital of New Delhi. There, the Queen and the Duke paid their respects at the tomb of Mahatma Ghandi. On 30 October 2023, King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived in Kenya for their first visit to the country since the death of Queen Elizabeth II and Charles’ own accession to the throne. The King is expected to face protests calling on the monarch to apologise for Britain’s role in Kenya’s colonial past, particularly the suppression of the Mau Mau rebellion in the first years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign.
