What if Thranduil has a sliver of malice in his heart ? The Elvenking has allied with Smaug the Stupendous after he is denied the jewel by the dwarf king, with the presence of Thorin Oakenshield. He lets Smaug smash and destroy Erebor, avenging his own loss.
