A volcanic eruption in Guatemala has led to road closures! This has never happened!

One of Central America’s most active volcanoes erupted again, spewing lava and ash, forcing Guatemalan authorities to close a main road on Sunday. A volcano called Fuego (Spanish for “fire“) roared into activity on the night from Saturday to Sunday, molten rock oozed down its slopes, and ash was thrown two kilometers (more than a mile) into the sky. A road leading south from central Guatemala has been closed as a precaution, traffic police spokesman Carlos Aquino said. The volcano is about 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Antigua, the country’s former picturesque capital and major tourist attraction. Authorities are monitoring the volcano and so far no one has been evacuated, said Rodolfo Garcia, a spokesman for civil protection.
