The strong storms also struck the federal state of Hesse and its largest city, Frankfurt am Main. In some places, up to 50 liters of rain per square meter fell within a few hours, causing chaos in the region. Roads, streets, vehicles, and basements were flooded. Several hospitals were affected, with Markus Hospital flooded and water leaking into the intensive care unit at Bethanien Clinic. The storm also caused serious disruptions at Frankfurt Airport, paralyzing operations for about two hours, with around 100 flights canceled. A troubling incident occurred in Hofheim am Taunus: a train collided with a fallen support structure for power lines, which was apparently damaged by a fallen tree during the storm. Fortunately, no one was injured. Storms also swept through Bavaria. In Arnstein, in the Main-Spessart district, heavy rain caused streets to flood to a meter’s height, and some basements were flooded to the ceiling. Several villages were cut off by water. The fire brigade made over 100 flights in the Bamberg and Forchheim area, where basements and underpasses were particularly hard-hit. In Lower Franconia, a tragic incident occurred as a man died from electrocution in his flooded basement during the hurricane. The Netherlands were also affected by the storms. Limburg province experienced severe thunderstorms and downpours, with Venlo and Heerlen particularly hard-hit. North of Venlo, over 70 mm of rainfall was recorded locally, causing flooding in several places in the province. Due to lightning strikes, railway traffic between Weert and Roermond was suspended. Rijkswaterstaat’s water reservoir overflowed in Valkenburg, flooding several homes. The municipality of Meerssen reported that some roads were covered with gravel and mud due to the huge influx of water. Several houses were damaged by lightning strikes, with one completely engulfed in flames after a fire broke out on its straw roof. In Berg en Terblijt, several homes were damaged by flash flooding.
