Achalasia is a rare esophageal motility disorder where the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) fails to relax properly, leading to difficulty in swallowing. It is caused by the progressive degeneration of nerve cells (ganglion cells) in the esophageal wall, particularly in the myenteric plexus.
