’God Save the King“ is the national anthem of the United Kingdom. The anthem’s lyrical origins can be traced back to the early 18th century, and it has undergone various modifications over time. The original anthem, known as “God Save great George our King,“ was first publicly performed in London in 1745 during the last Jacobite rebellion. The tune of ’God Save the King’ is remarkably similar to works of John Bull, a renowned English composer and organist of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. However, the exact origin of the melody is somewhat unclear, and it is possible that Bull’s contribution may have been more in the form of popularising an existing tune rather than creating it. The anthem has evolved to reflect changes in the monarchy, with the lyrics adapted to suit the reigning monarch’s gender. For example, during the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II, the anthem was sung as “God Save the Queen.“ The anthem is commonly played at official events and ceremonies, symbolising loyalty and allegiance to the British monarch.
