Who would win in a fight, one polar bear or six dogs and a human? Fortunately, it didn’t come to that, but only barely. A video emerged of just such an incident that happened in March in Uelen, about as far northeast as you can get (it’s the bit of Russia Sarah Palin can see from her house, we think). In the middle of the night, residents of the area awoke to the sound of barking dogs who had spotted a very large, unwelcome visitor. The sensible thing to do in such encounters is run, but at the top of the world that means just running into more polar bears. Vitaly, a local resident, went in for some pictures. The bear went in for… probably best not to imagine that.
Vitaly seemed on the brink of having the LiveLeak logo appear in his video when the dogs, still barking, came to the rescue. They shepherded the bear away so he could continue doing what polar bears are supposed to be doing this time of year: migrating back north towards Wrangel Island. We’re not surprised the bear got lost. Longitudinally, Wrangel Island is both the northeasternmost and northwesternmost place on Earth.
