The Angara is the only river that rises in Lake Baikal. The river carries its water almost two thousand kilometers to replenish the mighty Yenisei river at the end of its journey. There is a beautiful legend among the locals that Angara, a naughty, eccentric daughter, fled from her father, Baikal, to her lover, Yenisei. And here, at the source of the Angara, there is one of the most important sacred places of Baikal, the Shaman Stone. The Shaman Stone is a surface promontory of the Angara Sill. It is 170 meters high, but only one and a half meters protrude from the surface. In the past, the protruding part was much larger, which can be clearly seen in this old photograph. The stone is located exactly in the middle of the source of the river - about five hundred meters from the right and left banks. The water around the Shaman Stone never freezes because of the high velocity of the current. The Buryats greatly revere the Shaman Stone and consider it to be the abode of the Great White Spirit, Emman-Sagan-Noyn. In the past, particularly important shamanic rituals were held here... Sacrifices to the Great Spirit... here the inhabitants of the Angara region made oaths that could not be broken, as the spirits would punish them with inevitable death... They prayed at the shaman’s stone... Criminals were brought here and left on the stone for the night... and if the criminal was not carried away by the water and did not die on the icy breath of Lake Baikal, he was considered justified and released. Lake Baikal is a unique natural entity of planetary scale. First, its size is impressive - it is the largest lake on the Eurasian continent, about 32,000 square kilometers, the size of Belgium or the Netherlands. And it is the deepest freshwater lake on Earth, with a maximum depth of nearly 1,700 meters. Second, Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake on Earth - that’s about a quarter of the world’s total reserves. Thirdly, the water of the lake is unique in its purity and transparency, it contains a lot of oxygen and hardly any mineral and organic impurities. Fourth, the water of Lake Baikal hides the highest mountains on Earth, more than seven thousand meters high. You will say that this is impossible, because the maximum depth of the lake is 1700 meters ... That’s right ... but there are also bottom sediments that have formed over the many millions of years that Lake Baikal has existed. So the thickness of these sediments exceeds 6000 meters. The flora and fauna of Lake Baikal is also unique. You can see this for yourself by visiting the Baikal Museum. As the name of the museum suggests, its main purpose is to collect information and directly study the ecosystem of a unique lake. And indeed, in the Baikal Museum you can learn everything about Lake Baikal! The history of the Great Lake, its parameters, characteristics, what animals, fish and plants live in the depths of Baikal and on its shores ... Besides, and this is another unique fact, two thirds of Baikal’s inhabitants are endemic, that is, they live only in this place and nowhere else. Listvyanka was mentioned for the first time in July 1726 in the diary of the Russian embassy on the way to China...
