We came up on this hawk devouring a bird. It looks like a Harris’s Hawk to us because of the yellow legs and beak, as well as the large size. It appears too big and dark in color to be a red tail hawk. The stripes on the tail make us think it could be a juvenile. What do you think?
Harris’s hawk are famous for hunting in packs. However, some young hawks end up on their own after they leave their mother’s pack and before they find their own.
We ID’d the hawk with the Petersen’s Guide.
