American company BAE Systems announced that it intends to upgrade the AN/ASQ-239 electronic warfare system to the Block 4 version for the US Air Force F-35 fighters.
The system in passive mode is said to allow the aircraft to remain undetected and detect and suppress aircraft, air defense radars and Chinese ships at long distances using radio frequency and infrared countermeasures, and to promptly make a decision on combat use.
The demo video shows the F-35 blinding a PLAAF Jian-20 fighter, an S-300 air defense missile system, and a Type 052D destroyer radar before using its onboard weapons suite. All of this action takes place in the Taiwan Strait.
