This historic film about the compound microscope was produced in 1953 by Bausch and Lomb, one of the oldest operating companies in the USA, which held many patents for microscopes and binoculars and was an international supplier of great renown. Today it is best known as a eye health products company.
A compound microscope is a microscope that uses multiple lenses to collect the light from the sample and then a separate set of lenses to focus that light for the viewer. It is heavier, larger, and costlier than a simple microscope, but it improves numerical aperture, reduced chromatic aberration, and offers adjustable magnification through interchangeable objective lenses. Note: The film appears to focus on a KAJ Binocular Stereomicroscope, or a related model.
Title sequence: Bausch & Lomb Optical Company: “The Compound Microscope”, Stanford L. Sobel, Carl Brose, Henry C. Wayne. Sturgis-Grant Productions, New York (0:07). Compound microscope on display table (0:30). Microscope with binocular body against plain background; conversion, monocular to binocular use (0:45). Simple compound microscope for student use (1:10). Various compound microscope models (1:20). Microscope spinning on display again (1:45). Diagram: path of light through microscope (2:00). Diagram: human vision—object, eye, lens, retina, light rays, image (2:10). Diagrams: compound microscope lens’ effect on vision—eyepiece, objective lens, stage, specimen, primary image, virtual image (2:44). Base of microscope demonstrated with fine adjustment controls (4:30). Base of microscope set alongside diagram of compound microscope parts (4:50). Arm of microscope demonstrated—pivoting joint of compound microscope, attached piece (5:00). Stage of microscope demonstrated with holes on side, attaching mechanical stage using thumb screws (5:27). Movable microscope stage demonstrated, using racks, pinyons, knobs, movable finger (5:40). Placing specimen slide on microscope stage (6:00).
