For the sake of documentation: How the US Marines test out an Active Denial System (i.e. a “giant microwave“). Which shows that directed energy weapon systems (or “heat rays“) are not SF but do exist and are being further developed. Odd though that the US is developing these toys and Europe ain’t, innit?
