Produced by United Nations Television, this documentary shows refugees in Talbieh Camp in East Jordan in 1968 after the 1967 Six-Day War, also known as the Naksa, June War, 1967 Arab-Israeli War, or Third Arab-Israeli War, where tensions between Israel and Jordan/Syria/Egypt led to conflict and resulted in Israel occupying the Golan Heights, West Bank, Gaza Strip, and Sinai Peninsula. This was the third of three Arab-Israeli wars in 1948, 1956, and 1967. Palestinian Arab and Bedouin refugees, mainly women in hijabs, are shown huddled outside white tents (0:18). Talbieh was one of six emergency camps set up after the war, mostly filled with Bedouins. It still exists today. In the film, Izzat Nashashibi, a refugee and Area Officer from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA) explains the difficult camp conditions, referencing the similar conditions after the first 1948 Arab-Israeli War—no water and a hot, dusty environment. Refugees walk and wait in long lines throughout the camp (2:10). Khalil Bouheisi, an Arab refugee in Gaza, is interviewed with his children, and says they were afraid when the bombing started (3:01). On November 19, 1947, the United Nations General Assembly resolved to partition Palestine into separate Arab and Jewish states. On May 14, 1948, the mandate of the UK in Palestine expired, leading to the proclamation of a Jewish state (Israel). The next day, the Arab states instituted armed action in Palestine, and 700,000 Arabs became refugees. United Nations (UN) soldiers are shown marching as a man watches from a field (4:40). Refugees, including men in keffiyeh headscarves, are shown sorting through sacks of food and provisions (5:00). UN relief workers from UNWRA pass out blankets and food to families and children (5:30). Refugee girls are shown in a school classroom (5:41). Three Gazan refugee men in suits, including Hamdi Herzella, sit on a couch and talk about leaving Palestine in 1948, former UNWRA Commissioner-General John Davis, and their hope to return (6:17). Various scenes of peasant farmers in other Arab countries are shown (9:10). Refugees are shown working in the camp making textiles, baking bread, and ironing clothing (9:50). Refugee children run through the streets past a man riding a donkey (10:00). UNWRA Jerusalem Area Officer Tony Becker John describes how refugees have improved their lives in the camp (10:05). Men in traditional Palestinian headdresses talk (11:18). Refugee men are shown in a typewriting class (11:25). A refugee girl in a classroom erases the chalkboard while a teacher talks in Arabic (12:20). Refugees are shown in UNWRA vocational training centers in carpentry and telecommunication courses (12:49). Four refugee women speak in English about their work in the camp (13:26). The camera pans to a tank on the side of the road and rubble (14:23). A refugee woman describes coming from Jericho to Amman after the 1967 war (14:59). Crowds of men, women, and children are shown in the camp waiting for food (15:36). Two men carry a water jug from the back of an UNWRA truck (15:56). Crowds of refugees wait with bowls and pots to enter a tent (17:27). A collapsed bridge is shown as a refugee woman crosses a river with a water jug (18:00). A woman talks about the 1948 Palestinian exodus from Lydda and Ramle, when Israeli troops captured the towns. She went from Madaba to Sultan to Ramallah to Jericho to Amman (20:02). A refugee man carries beans and a pot (20:42). Refugees crammed in a pickup truck (20:45). Refugees carry baskets on their heads and children play (23:38). UN Secretary General U Thant from Burma speaks to conclude the film (25:49).
