Universal Newsreel coverage of the resignation of Nikita Khrushchev. On 14 October 1964, the Presidium and the Central Committee each voted to accept Khrushchev’s “voluntary“ request to retire from his offices for reasons of “advanced age and ill health.“ Leonid Brezhnev was elected First Secretary, while Alexei Kosygin succeeded Khrushchev as premier. Khrushchev was deposed him largely due to his erratic and cantankerous behavior, regarded by the Communist Party as a tremendous embarrassment on the international stage. His failures included botched agricultural programs, the devastating quarrel with China, and the humiliating resolution of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, were the major factors in his downfall. Khrushchev’s legacy included de-Stanlinization, building the Berlin Wall, and many achievements in space by the USSR.
