NU METAL THEN VS. NOW

Nu Metal stripped out much of the ornamentation of traditional metal - it was all about simple groovy riffs, down-tuned guitars, and angst-driven lyrics, often combined with electronic, rap, or industrial elements. This simplicity made heavy music that was extremely accessible and broke through to the mainstream like never before, with bands like Linkin Park, System of a Down, and Limp Bizkit reaching their peaks in the 2000s. However, these same qualities have caused nu metal to sometimes be rejected by hardcore metalheads as “not metal enough.“ After dying down by the late 2000s, nu metal has started to re-emerge recently with modern bands that draw heavily from those early nu metal giants, this time combined with metalcore and djent influences. The focus on groove remains, but how do you think their riffs stack up to the classics? Let me know in the comments!
