Master of Puppets got some Stranger Things love. Now Metallica returns the favor

The latest volume of Netflix’s hit sci-fi series, which touched down at the crack of Friday, features an epic moment for actor Joseph Quinn, who appears in Season 4 as fan-favorite metal head Eddie Munson. In the season finale, Eddie performs “Master of Puppets” on top of the alternate-universe version of his trailer while bloodthirsty “Demobats” swarm around him. “It’s an incredible honor to be such a big part of Eddie’s journey and to once again be keeping company with all of the amazing artists featured in the show,” the band said in statements posted on social media. Metallica, currently composed of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo, first released the song in March 1986. This song plays in a key scene in a season 4 episode of Stranger Things where the metalhead character Eddie Munson plays it on guitar to help battle a demon. The episode is set in March 1986, the same month the song was released on the Master Of Puppets album. Tye Trujillo, the son of Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo, added guitar tracks to the version that appears in the show. We’re not sure if the character is named Eddie because it’s the name of the Iron Maiden mascot, but in the previous episode, we see him pick up a copy of an Iron Maiden cassette and say “This is music!” and he also wears an Iron Maiden patch on his jacket. Thanks to its use on Stranger Things, the song entered the Hot 100 for the first time in 2022. It also made its debut appearance on the Official UK Singles Chart and various other tallies worldwide.
