Paulette Goddard and George Gershwin Home Video 1937

Paulette Goddard met George Gershwin at a party at the home of Edward G. Robinson in March 1937, her husband at that time Charlie Chaplin was also there. A romance between Goddard and Gershwin followed. They met secretly at Gershwin’s home in Beverly Hills and in Palm Springs and even went on vacation together for two months in May 1937. George Gershwin died on July 11th the same year at the age of 38 because of a brain tumor. Before his death, Gershwin asked Goddard for her hand in marriage, but she didn’t wanted to leave Charlie Chaplin. Gershwin’s heart was broken. It is said that he thought of Paulette when he wrote the song “They can’t take that away from me“, which Fred Astaire later sung in the movie “Shall We Dance“.
