On This Day | 7th June 1967 | Celtic and the great Alfredo Di Stefano’s Testimonial

When Alfredo Di Stefano retired at the age of 40, a special farewell match was arranged in Madrid for June 7, 1967 - and it was the newly crowned European Champions who provided the opposition. Jock Stein took his triumphant Celtic side to Madrid to pay tribute to a great footballer. However, it was a diminutive genius in green and white Hoops who stole the show. Jimmy Johnstone put on a breathtaking performance that had the Spanish crowd chanting ‘Ole! Ole!’ every time he touched the ball, and the Madrid players were reluctant to go near him in the second-half. Afterwards, Di Stefano sought Jinky out for a special photograph. Celtic won 1-0 thanks to a Bobby Lennox goal. It may well have been Di Stefano’s night, but it was definitely Jinky’s game. Celtic’s season that began with a 4-1 win over Manchester United finished with a 1-0 win over Real Madrid – and the Hoops won all FIVE of the trophies they played for in between those games. So it’s little wonder that the Real master chose Celtic and that run of success also partly explains why the Hoops won the game as 120,000 Spaniards look on. Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Zidane, Platini, Ronaldo and Messi arguably top list of the greatest players ever, but one man who deserves to be mentioned with these greats is Alfredo Di Stefano. --- 🍀Subscribe today to the official YouTube of the world’s first Quadruple Treble winners, Celtic Football Club: 📽️ Plus, you can watch exclusive player and manager interviews, full-match replays and go behind the scenes of Celtic FC ONLY on Celtic TV.
