Originally written for violin and bassio continuo, “La Follia“ is a set of variations on a popular and lively dance theme that was prevalent in the 17th and 18th centuries. Vivaldi’s version is characterized by its spirited and repetitive theme, which serves as a foundation for a series of increasingly elaborate and virtuosic variations. Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was an Italian composer of the Baroque era, celebrated for his significant contributions to classical music. Born in Venice, Italy, Vivaldi is best known for his prolific output of concertos, particularly his violin concertos, which played a pivotal role in the development of the genre. He was also a priest and is often referred to as the “Red Priest“ due to his distinctive red hair.
