Practicing My Spanish & Chinese in Mexico’s Biggest Chinatown

Chinese laborers originally came here in the 19th century to work on irrigation projects and their descendants stayed on in Mexico, and today the Chinese Mexican residents here speak perfect Spanish and quite often Chinese as well. The city is famous for its Chinese food and has more Chinese restaurants per capita than anywhere else in Mexico, and you’ll see plenty of Chinese shops and supermarkets as well. It’s also famous for its tunnels, which were originally built by the Chinese community to live underground to escape the heat but came to be used during Prohibition to support gambling and speakeasy operations.
