Jumping Derby (1963)

Hickstead, Sussex. LV. Pan, champion horsewoman Pat Smythe on Scorchin takes the water jump and the white palisade. SV. Crowd. GV. Miss Ute Richter from Germany riding Scholli, No 28, comes down the Derby bank. GV. Crowd. GV. David Broome riding Ballan Silver Knight, No 13, takes the water jump. LV. He takes the white palisade. SV. Crowd. LV. David Barker riding Mr Softee comes down the Derby bank. The horse almost falls but recovers well and jumps the following fence. LV. Mr Ted Edgar riding Jacapo comes down the Derby bank and clears the fence. Mr Edgar is riding with right hand only because his left arm is broken. LV. Crowd. GV. Miss Anneli Drummond Hay riding Merely a Monarch, No 37, takes jump 15 (two gates) but she knocks the first gate down and just clears the second one. This is the jump off between numbers 37, 33 & 58. Miss Drummond Hay came third eventually. GV. Pan, horse No 33, Sugar Daddy ridden by Miss Pat Pharazyn, takes the water jump and the horse’s back legs land in the water to give her
