It is located in the prefecture of Ioannina. It is characterized as a landscape of special natural beauty. Its area is 11.5 km2, while it is located at an altitude of 1,350 m, which ranks it as the most mountainous large lake in Greece. Its construction began in 1981 and was completed in 1991. The lake and the lakeside area fall under the jurisdiction of the Public Electricity Company . The purpose of the construction of the project is to exploit part of the water from the sources of the Aoos River, for the production of electricity. The project has increased Greece’s average hydroelectric potential production by 7%. The lake of the Hydroelectric Station of Pigon Aoos was built in an area with dense vegetation, where there was no human activity that would cause water pollution. From the waters of the lake, there is the possibility of irrigating the Plateau of Politsa, where the inhabitants are active in the primary production sector.
