A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 has rocked eastern Turkey and Syria, according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority.
Turkey’s Malatya province was shaken by the quake on Wednesday morning, with tremors felt in the cities of Diyarbakir, Elazig and Malatya.
Syria’s state news agency says the earthquake was felt in the provinces of Hasakah, Deir Al Zor and Aleppo.
Today’s M6.1 quake occurred in a region where the February 6, 2023, earthquake sequence devastated Turkey and Syria, severely damaging more than 160 000 buildings. The earlier sequence included magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 earthquakes, leading to a 300 km (186 miles) surface rupture and widespread destruction across urban and rural areas.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre said the quake was at a depth of 9km (5.6 miles) below the earth.
