Cantaloupe Island – Herbie Hancock- Drum Transcription & Performance by Timo Ickenroth with Sheet Real Book Drumming is a YouTube series of mine in which I transcribe and play choruses of songs from the Real Book, the bible for all jazz players. In this video, it’s the first 40 bars of the piece “Cantaloupe Island“ from pianist Herbie Hancock’s 1964 album “Empyrean Isles.“ Tony Williams was on the drums. Cantaloupe Island was recorded in 1964 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs in New Jersey for the Blue Note label. In addition to Herbie Hancock on piano, one hears Freddie Hubbard on cornet, Ron Carter on upright bass and Tony Williams on drums. The binary piece is one of the first examples of a modal jazz composition with a funky played beat. Incidentally, the title Cantaloupe Island does not refer to a real existing island. Instead, it is a fantasy island that bears the name of a melon variety, the cantaloupe melon. As with my other drum covers, I try to stay as original as possible to the studio recording in terms of playing. The sheet music is available for free download to subscribers of my site . Das binäre Stück ist eines der ersten Beispiele für eine modale Jazzkomposition mit einem funky gespielten Beat. Der Titel Cantaloupe Island bezeichnet im Übrigen keine real existierende Insel. Vielmehr handelt es sich stattdessen um eine Phantasieinsel, die den Namen einer Melonensorte trägt, der Cantaloupe-Melone. In Deutschland kennt man diese Sorte unter der Bezeichnungen Warzen- oder Zuckermelone. Wie auch bei meinen anderen Drum Covern versuche ich spielerisch so original wie möglich an der Studioaufnahme zu bleiben.
