October 20, 1989 would see Pretty Hate Machine hit the shelves. This was the debut record that Trent had worked so hard on over the past year or so. Whilst he was generally influenced by 80s music, one album in particular was a key turning point for him. Pink Floyd’s The Wall, released in 1979 was somewhat of an obsession for Reznor. He said he listened to this album countless times when he was younger so it was a major factor that would determine the direction of Pretty Hate Machine.
