The laid-back bustle and sunny charm of Rio de Janeiro is re-channelled though the prism of MOMO.s new creative base and London home on his first new material in 4 years, with new song, Jão. Featuring a brand-new band consisting of UK jazz musicians and Marcelo Frota’s favourite Brazilian players, Jão is the first new material from his forthcoming album, conceived and made in London at the Total Refreshment Centre in Stoke Newington.
Marcelo’s previous work, 6 albums prior, has swayed in the winds of early Milton Nascimento and the Pernambuco Afro-sounds of the North east of Brazil. Jão and the new album promises all of these Brazilian pleasures with additional thrust of UK jazz culture, and further cements MOMO.’s name as a relatively young and forward thinking artist who realigns his spirit to MPB.
Jão features some eminent figures in London and UK’s jazz scene including Jessica Lauren (keys), Nick Woodmansey (drums), Rosie Turton (trombone) and Magnus Mehta (percussion) alongside the voice and guitar of Marcelo Frota accompanied by fellow countryman Caetano Malta on bass.
Jão (Marcelo Frota / Wado)
jão
gafieira joão
quando o suor descer
pra subir bate palma
jão
quando as coxa bater
e a poeira subir
gira a roda da saia
jão
nosso samba é melhor
quando o amor é maior
muita prosa atrapalha
jão
hão de ter muitos nãos
e não se abale não
todo rio deságua
